The Complexity of our Fathers

Everybody has one

Not all stick around

Not all are destined to survive

Not all can stand their ground

The ones who are present with us

Love the best way they know

Some abuse and use and lie

Others nurture and help us grow

Bless the daddies that try their best

With loving deep voices

They don’t lash out when they’re stressed

They provide advice but don’t make our choices

Many Fathers love too many

From lover to lover like rolling stones

They can’t provided attention deserved

Repeatin’ the cycle of broken homes

Daughters are quick to forgive their dads

Sons want approval but are ashamed to say

We who don’t fit in conservative ways

Have fear of becoming disowned and dismayed

God bless the daddies who teach and protect

Those who break cycles of deflect and neglect

Who hold out a hand when you are sinkin’

Who emphasize critical thinkin’

And question your drinkin’

Take a bullet for you without blinkin’

Who teach us our past

The importance of purpose

Who compliment our brilliance

Not only our surface

God bless the daddies who teach and protect

Those who break cycles of deflect and neglect
